The 40 yard container in Chesapeake
The 40 yard is our largest dumpster, built for maximum capacity and fewer hauls. Large construction and demolition, warehouse, office and industrial cleanouts, commercial renovations, roofing on bigger buildings, full-home remodels and large property cleanups are its jobs. It holds about 40 cubic yards, roughly twelve pickup truck loads.
Bulky and mixed debris is what justifies the 40: drywall, framing, fixtures, siding and windows, pallets, packaging and furniture on larger projects. The footprint matches the 20 and 30, but at eight feet tall it is usually loaded by a crew, and it needs flat, stable ground.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide on a lot or job site, pavement or a pad rather than grass, with clear room for the truck to reach it and pull out, and no vehicles or obstructions in the way; we check the spot on the call
Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs
Large jobs bring paperwork as well as debris. A construction yard in Chesapeake can use containers under a City permit, and the City's permits page covers excavation and construction. We check the City's rules before booking.
Demolition can bring state and federal rules for asbestos and other hazardous material. Asbestos is not allowed in our containers, so tell us before the demolition starts.
Access and placement for a 40 yard
The truck needs room to reach the spot and flat, stable ground such as a paved lot or a pad, and the container needs about 22 by 8 feet of it. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it, and our drivers place it with care even on tight or busy sites. A 40 in a public way is a different question: a spot in a City street or right-of-way may need a permit, and we never place a container in a state highway right-of-way. Virginia's VDOT rules bar any nontransportation use of state-highway right-of-way without written VDOT permission (24VAC30-151-20), so a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-64, I-264, I-564, US-17, US-13, US-58, US-460, VA-168, VA-171 or any other state route.
Suitability
Is the 40 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 40 yard for
- Large construction and demolition
- Commercial renovations and roofing jobs
- Warehouse, office and industrial cleanouts
- Full-home remodels
- Large property and community cleanups
Pick a different size for
- Heavy-only loads of concrete, dirt and brick (a 10 or 15 yard manages the weight)
- Small jobs, where you would pay for unused space
- Sites without truck access or room to place it
- Asbestos, oil, paint, fuel or medical waste
Placing a 40 yard container in Chesapeake
It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide on a lot or job site, pavement or a pad rather than grass, with clear room for the truck to reach it and pull out, and no vehicles or obstructions in the way; we check the spot on the call. The driveway comes first. Chesapeake's zoning page puts roll-off containers and dumpsters inside its definition of "container" and sets limits for portable storage containers on residential lots; the page does not say which limits apply to a dumpster, so we check the City's rules before booking. For property that is not residential, the page says containers "follow other regulations" (Zoning Ordinance sec. 13-402, which we could not read). The City's permits page says permits may be required for excavation and construction and does not mention containers. We found no street-placement or hauler-licence rule on the City pages we could read. We check the City's rules before booking. For added protection, you can put plywood or boards under the wheels. Each town page covers its own rules.

40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Not covered here? Call (757) 844-5926 and ask.
Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?
Its footprint is the same as a 20 or 30 - about 22 by 8 feet - so it can go on some residential properties, but at eight feet tall it is a lot of box for a house. For most homes a 20 or 30 is the better fit. Ask and we will say which.
How do you load a 40 yard?
Usually with a crew. The walls are about eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow. Spread debris evenly through the container and keep it level with the top rim.
Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?
Not as the whole load. About 5 to 6 tons is included, and concrete, soil or brick reach that limit at a fraction of the volume. For heavy debris we recommend a 10 or 15 yard, or several loads.
Do you offer swaps on long jobs?
Yes. For contractors and ongoing projects we arrange swaps and scheduled service. Tell us the scope and how long the job runs, and we quote the whole job.
