Whether you are renovating, clearing out a property or dealing with storm debris, a roll-off on site keeps the job moving. Here is how renting one works in Chesapeake and across Hampton Roads.

Renovating a kitchen in Great Bridge, clearing out a property in Deep Creek, running a job near Hickory or dealing with storm debris: most of these jobs make more waste than people expect. A roll-off dumpster puts all of it in one place on site. You load at your own pace, you skip the trips to a disposal site, and the yard stays cleaner and safer while the work goes on.
Chesapeake and the wider Hampton Roads area have steady residential and commercial building, with roofing jobs, home renovations and cleanouts happening all the time. Whether you need a residential dumpster for a garage cleanout or a construction dumpster for demolition debris, the first steps are the same: pick the size and check where the container will sit.
Start with the job, then check the weight. Our five sizes run from 10 to 40 cubic yards. Capacity is given in pickup truck loads, and the weight allowance is often what runs out first when the material is heavy.
| Size | Approx. L × W × H | Holds about | Typical weight limit | Often used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 yard | 12 ft × 8 ft × 3.5 to 4 ft | 3 pickup loads | 2 to 3 tons | Bathroom remodels, garage or small attic cleanouts, yard debris, small roofing jobs |
| 15 yard | 14 ft × 8 ft × 4.5 to 5 ft | 4 to 5 pickup loads | 2 to 3 tons | Medium renovations, flooring and drywall, deck or porch removal |
| 20 yard | 22 ft × 8 ft × 4.5 ft | 6 pickup loads | 3 to 4 tons | Kitchen remodels, roofing tear-offs, large yard cleanups, estate cleanouts |
| 30 yard | 22 ft × 8 ft × 6 ft | 9 pickup loads | 4 to 5 tons | Whole-house cleanouts, large remodels, construction debris, demolition |
| 40 yard | 22 ft × 8 ft × 8 ft | 12 pickup loads | 5 to 6 tons | Commercial construction, major demolition, warehouse or office cleanouts |
Weight limits are typical figures and depend on the debris. Heavy material such as concrete, dirt, brick, asphalt and shingles uses the allowance quickly, so keep it apart from light debris and tell us what is going in when you book. Our 20 yard is our most popular size. It handles most renovations and cleanouts and still fits many driveways.
Typical rentals in Chesapeake range from $295 to $695, with no hidden fees. Where a price lands depends on the dumpster size, the type of debris, the delivery location and the length of the rental. Heavy materials such as concrete, roofing shingles and construction debris can raise disposal costs. Keeping the dumpster past the standard period adds to the total, and any permit the location needs can add to it too.

Driveway or private lot comes first, but in Chesapeake a container on private property is not automatically permit-free. The City's Portable Storage Containers page, from the Zoning Administration, puts roll-off containers and dumpsters inside its definition of a container. The page sets limits for portable storage containers on residential lots, but it does not say which limits apply to a dumpster, so we check the City's rules before booking. The page also says containers on a residential lot may not be used for contractors' materials, solid waste or hazardous materials. The page's extension for a damaged home under renovation is also for portable storage containers, and it does not say whether it covers a dumpster.
For non-residential property the same page says containers follow other rules, which point to section 13-402 of the Zoning Ordinance. We could not read section 13-402, so we check the City's rules before booking. A temporary construction yard with a City permit may use containers and dumpsters, as long as the yard sits outside the public right-of-way. That permit can run up to 18 months.
For a street or right-of-way spot, we found no dumpster or roll-off placement rule in the City pages we could read. The City's code, Chapter 62 on solid waste, could not be read. The City's permit page covers excavation, land-disturbing and construction work, and it does not mention containers. So for a street spot we check the City's rules before booking. Our permit guide covers the other cities and counties.
Most roll-offs take household junk and furniture, construction debris such as wood, drywall, flooring and siding, roofing shingles, yard waste, and metal, plastic and cardboard. Concrete, brick and asphalt are fine within the weight limits.
Keep these out: paint, thinners, oils and automotive fluids; hazardous chemicals and solvents; batteries and electronics, including fluorescent bulbs; propane tanks, fuel containers and other pressurized cylinders; tires; medical or biohazard waste; asbestos; and appliances that contain refrigerant, such as fridges and freezers. Not sure about an item? Call before you load it. Our terms say improper disposal can bring extra fees or penalties.
A standard rental includes up to 7 days, unless otherwise arranged. Need longer? Call us. Extensions are available on request and may carry daily or weekly fees. When you are ready for pickup, call us so extra rental days are not added.
Keep the load level with or below the top edge. Overfilled dumpsters cannot be hauled, and if you need more room we can swap the bin. Keep the access clear for the truck. Our terms say we are not responsible for damage to driveways, pavers, lawns and curbs unless protection was requested and confirmed in advance, so ask for protective boards when you book. Plywood or boards are a good idea on any finished surface.
Tidewater Dumpster Rentals is a locally owned waste-management company, with our yard on Sampson Creek Rd in Chesapeake, approx. 3.6 road miles from the middle of the city. We serve Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and the rest of Hampton Roads. Delivery is often the same day or next day, when availability allows. If you call before noon we can often deliver within hours.
We are Licensed & insured. When you call, we ask where the box will go and let you know if a permit is likely needed. Where a placement needs a City permit or the City has a rule about the spot, we check the City's rules before booking.

A 10 or 15 yard covers most single-room jobs. Most full kitchen remodels fit a 15 or 20 yard, and whole-home flooring often calls for a 20. Tell us which rooms are involved when you call.
Possibly. We found no street-placement rule in the City pages we could read, but the City code could not be read. For a street spot we check the City's rules before booking, and a driveway or private lot is the simplest choice.
