The 20 yard container in Chesapeake
When a caller is not sure, the 20 yard is often the answer. It is one of our most requested sizes for homeowners, remodelers and contractors. Multi-room remodels, roofing tear-offs, whole-home cleanouts, estate and foreclosure cleanouts, and large yard cleanups all fit. It holds about 20 cubic yards, roughly six pickup truck loads.
It is about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It fits many standard driveways, and for a project that makes debris over several days it is often an efficient choice.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, such as a driveway or pavement, not the lawn, with clear room for the truck to reach it and pull out, and no vehicles or obstructions in the way; we check the spot on the call
Renovations, roofs and whole-home cleanouts
Furniture, boxes and mixed household junk from a whole-home cleanout; drywall, wood, cabinets and flooring from a multi-room renovation; shingles off a roof; branches and shrubs from a landscaping job; and doors, framing and mixed debris from light demolition. Shingles and tile are heavy, so tell us about the roof or the floor and we help you plan the weight.
Estate and foreclosure cleanouts are common 20 yard jobs as well. Tell us what is in the house and we say whether the 20 is enough.
What the 20 yard includes
The 20 yard includes disposal up to about 3 to 4 tons, depending on the debris, and a standard rental period of 5 to 7 days. Need it longer? Extensions are available for an additional daily fee. Tile, plaster, shingles and wet yard waste add up quickly, so plan by weight as well as volume and keep the load level with the top rim. If your debris is mostly concrete or dirt, a 10 yard is the better size.
Suitability
Is the 20 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 20 yard for
- Whole-home and multi-room cleanouts
- Kitchen and bathroom renovations
- Roofing tear-offs, with the weight planned first
- Landscaping and yard debris
- Light demolition and mixed construction debris
Pick a different size for
- Mostly concrete, dirt, brick or tile (a 10 yard handles the weight better)
- Major demolition - the 30 or 40 is the size for that
- Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length
- Paints, thinners, oils, fuel, tires, batteries or propane tanks
Placing a 20 yard container in Chesapeake
It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, such as a driveway or pavement, not the lawn, with clear room for the truck to reach it and pull out, and no vehicles or obstructions in the way; we check the spot on the call. The driveway comes first. Chesapeake's zoning page puts roll-off containers and dumpsters inside its definition of "container" and sets limits for portable storage containers on residential lots; the page does not say which limits apply to a dumpster, so we check the City's rules before booking. For property that is not residential, the page says containers "follow other regulations" (Zoning Ordinance sec. 13-402, which we could not read). The City's permits page says permits may be required for excavation and construction and does not mention containers. We found no street-placement or hauler-licence rule on the City pages we could read. We check the City's rules before booking. For added protection, you can put plywood or boards under the wheels. Each town page covers its own rules.

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Not covered here? Call (757) 844-5926 and ask.
How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?
About six, or roughly 20 cubic yards of debris. Think of a whole-home cleanout of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.
Can a 20 yard fit in my driveway?
In most cases. It is about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, so put it on the driveway or a paved area rather than the lawn, and keep the spot clear for the truck. A spot in a street or right-of-way may need a City permit; we check the City's rules before booking.
What is the typical weight limit on a 20 yard?
Typically 3 to 4 tons, depending on the debris type. Shingles, tile, concrete, dirt and wet yard waste are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not. Call and we help you choose the most cost-effective size for heavy debris.
How long is the rental?
The standard rental period is 5 to 7 days, set on your quote. If the job runs on, we extend it for an additional daily fee. If it fills early, we can swap it. If you finish early, call and we schedule a pickup.
Can I get a 20 yard the same day?
Same-day or next-day delivery is available across Chesapeake and nearby cities when availability allows. If you call before noon, we can often deliver within hours. Call (757) 844-5926 with the address and what is going in.
