Fall Yard Cleanup: When to Rent a Dumpster

Why fall fills the yard so fast

As temperatures cool across Chesapeake and the wider Hampton Roads area, yards fill with fallen leaves, storm-damaged limbs and the last round of trimmed shrubs before winter. A few yard bags do the job for light raking. For a real fall cleanup, a roll-off is often the faster choice. Homeowners in Great Bridge, Deep Creek and Greenbrier often underestimate how much a single weekend of cleanup produces.

When bags stop working

Bags make sense for a few leaves. They stop making sense when you are clearing several trees, taking out old shrubs, or tackling a yard that has not been maintained in a while. Bagging a big cleanup can take a whole weekend and many trips to the curb. A dumpster on the driveway lets you toss branches, leaves and clippings straight in, which saves time and your back.

Choosing the size for yard waste

Most residential yard cleanups fit a 10 or 15 yard. Larger properties and full landscaping overhauls often need a 20 yard. Yard debris is bulky but light, so volume usually decides the size before weight does. Soil, sod and mulch use the weight allowance faster, so tell us what is in the load when you call.

What goes in, and what to keep out

Leaves, branches, grass clippings, shrub trimmings and small stumps are all welcome, along with clean wood, soil, sod and mulch on our yard waste service. Keep out treated lumber, soil mixed with construction debris, and anything containing chemicals. Those should be disposed of separately. If your cleanup also includes household items, a general roll-off may be the simpler choice than a dedicated yard waste dumpster. Tell us what is going in and we will recommend one.

Where the box can sit

Driveway first. Keep the access clear for the truck and move vehicles out of the way. Protective boards are available on request, so ask us when you book, because our terms say we are not responsible for damage to driveways, lawns or curbs unless protection was requested and confirmed in advance. If the spot is a street or public right-of-way, a permit or consent may be needed, and we check the rules for that city or county before booking. Our permit guide has the details by locality.

Book a few days ahead

Fall is one of our busiest seasons, so book a few days ahead to get the date and size you want. Delivery is often the same day or next day, when availability allows, and if you call before noon we can often deliver within hours. When the pile is ready, call, text or email for pickup. A standard rental includes up to 7 days, so plan the cleanup in stages and call early if you need more time.

When should I rent a dumpster instead of using yard bags?

When the job is more than a few bags: several trees, old shrubs, or a yard that has not been cleaned up in a while. A roll-off saves the trips to the curb and the weekend they would take.

What size is right for a fall cleanup?

Most residential yard cleanups fit a 10 or 15 yard. Larger properties and landscaping overhauls usually need a 20 yard. Tell us what is coming out and we will recommend the size.

Can I put soil or treated lumber in a yard waste dumpster?

Clean soil, sod and mulch are accepted on our yard waste service. Treated lumber, soil mixed with construction debris and anything with chemicals should be disposed of separately. Ask us before loading anything you are unsure about.

How long can I keep the dumpster?

A standard rental includes up to 7 days, unless otherwise arranged. Extensions are available on request and may carry daily or weekly fees.
