What Can and Can't Go in a Dumpster in Virginia

Most household and renovation debris can go in a roll-off. The exceptions are the items that are hazardous, regulated or dangerous to haul, and each has somewhere else to go.

What Can and Can't Go in a Dumpster in Virginia

Yes: what goes in

  • Household junk and furniture. Clutter, boxes and furniture are welcome. If a bulky item is unclear, call before you load it.
  • Construction and renovation debris. Wood, drywall, flooring, siding, trim, cabinets, countertops and fixtures.
  • Roofing shingles. They are heavy, so mind the weight allowance.
  • Concrete, brick and asphalt. Within the weight limits.
  • Metal, plastic and cardboard.
  • Yard waste. Branches, shrubs, grass clippings, leaves, small stumps, and clean wood, soil, sod and mulch on our yard waste service.

No: what stays out

  • Paint, thinners, oils and automotive fluids, and solvents.
  • Hazardous chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Batteries and electronics, including fluorescent bulbs.
  • Propane tanks, fuel containers and pressurized cylinders.
  • Tires.
  • Medical or biohazard waste.
  • Asbestos.
  • Appliances that contain refrigerant, such as fridges and freezers.

Our terms say improper disposal can bring extra fees or legal penalties, so if you are not sure about an item, call before you load it.

Where each no-item goes instead

ItemWhere it goes
Paint, solvents, oils, automotive fluids, household chemicals, batteriesYour city or county collection centers and hazardous-waste drop-offs. The City of Chesapeake's collection centers are one option, and we can point you to the right one.

TiresAsk your city or county where tires are accepted. We do not take them in our boxes.
Propane tanks and fuel containersAsk your city or county, or your supplier, about a return or drop-off. Keep them out of the box.
Fridges, freezers and other appliances with refrigerantOur junk removal service takes appliances such as refrigerators, with proper handling included.
Medical or biohazard wasteAsk your medical provider or pharmacy for a proper disposal route.
AsbestosA qualified asbestos contractor. Never in our boxes. If an older home may contain it, have it checked before demolition starts.

Heavy loads and mixing

Mixed household and renovation debris is fine in one box. Heavy material such as concrete, dirt, brick, asphalt and shingles uses the weight allowance quickly, so keep it separate where you can and tell us what it is before you load. Dirt and rock mixed in with household junk should be checked first, because the weight limits apply to the whole load.

Loading the box safely

Keep the debris level with or below the top edge. Overfilled dumpsters cannot be hauled, so we may need to adjust or swap the bin. Spread the load so it does not pile up at one end, and keep the access clear for the truck. The customer is responsible for overloaded or blocked containers under our terms. Do not move the dumpster yourself: our drivers position it for loading and pickup. If you need it moved, call us.

Where the loads go

All debris goes to disposal and recycling facilities in the Hampton Roads area. We sort and recycle materials such as concrete, metal and wood whenever possible, to reduce the load that goes to landfill, and we keep yard waste as its own load where we can.

If you are unsure, call first

Call before you load an item you are not sure about. It is quicker to ask than to deal with a rejected item afterwards. Call (757) 844-5926, and we will tell you where it can go.
